Historic Indianola, Hurricane Ghost Town

September 2009

Photo set is of the site where the city of Indianola, Texas, once stood. Situated on the Matagorda Bay, approximately halfway down the Gulf Coast of Texas, Indianola after the middle of the 19th century was the third largest port city in Texas. However, it was destroyed by two successive hurricanes eleven years apart in 1875 and 1886. After the second storm, the city was abandoned forever.

Photos with filenames in the 1000 or 2000 series were contributed to this site by Tom Parrish. Photos with filenames ending in other numerical suffixes are from an original photo set, copyright 2009. Click on any thumbnail to view the larger image.
